Queue my surprise… my grandma all of a sudden speaking Japanese, randomly singing along to a song that I was playing on cello. That’s when I learned this was a Japanese folk song and was something that she learned as a kid. Go figure.

My grandma was a super devout Catholic, who seemed to endlessly pray for everyone and anything. The stories that were shared during her ceremonies by countless people painted her as someone who loved, and was loved. What better way is there to be remembered than that? From the words of Jungho hyung, Minjung noona, Keun appa, appa, gohmo, Priest Rafael, her friends, it just shows the laundry list of people that were touched one way or another by my grandma. It hurts knowing that I won’t be able to hear her voice anymore or to be able to see her anymore here, but I have full faith knowing that she’s in a place where there is no more pain or suffering. Where she finally has her full eyesight back, where she can be with the savior and saints that she’s desperately prayed to for years.

It sucks that I wasn’t able to tell her about the fun things I got to do in Korea and how much I enjoyed my time there. Honestly, when I first landed there were so many what-ifs and whys that went through my head. What if I came back only a few days earlier? What if I didn’t go to LA? I’m just glad I was able to see her one last time on Sunday and at least say something to her. I’m glad that my dad and uncle were able to say their last goodbyes before she passed.

My favorite memory was when I went over to her apartment to help her with the TV and boom box… something that she always loved to just leave on, because all she would listen to was church sermons. She for some reason, would randomly tell me stories of appa in the past; the friends that he had, and (unfortunately) how I should be getting married since he was dating and about to get married at that time. It gave a glimpse into the past of my dad’s life when he was around my age. During that entire time she was just able to reminisce and sounded so proud of him and what he is now.

Grandma lived a long and full life… gave probably almost everything that she can to us and the people around her. Whether it was when dad was younger as a kid to him and his siblings, or even later to me and the other grandchildren, all that love, those moments, and memories should be forever cherished.

Rest in peace grandma. I love you.

Hearing this track just brings me back to my childhood practicing cello… hating it so much, but one day playing this small piece in freaking Suzuki Cello Book 2, my grandma starting singing along to it.
